Peter, thanks for your very thoughtful response. Have you posted your big rocks list somewhere so you can remember every day? I think that a lot of my little rocks have to do with perfectionism and trying to please other people. I just told a client recently to say no to everything this week that was not an absolute yes. I take the same advice myself. It's so great that you get how important it is to spend quality time with your child while he is little because the time does pass fast and you can never get those years back. The key I have found with all that happens in life, is to accept that you're not going to get everything done, but just to make sure you do the most important things.

In reply to <a href="https://worldstagecoaching.com/2016/09/23/big-rock-little-rock/#comment-7">yourworldstage</a>.

My top 3 rocks are quite simple and probably something most other people can connect to.

1 - Be a good father to my son (18 months old). I think this time with him is so precious and hard to compensate for later. We have so much fun together but it's hard to balance with all the other demands on life (work, cooking, cleaning, shopping, marriage, friendship, my own activities)

2 - Be a good husband. In many way this is a bigger challenge since it's so easy to let life's pressures get you down and then take some of that out on your spouse/partner. It's time to put my wife at her correct priority (one of my two biggest rocks) and act like the man she deserves to have.

3 - Find the way to doing more of the work I love. I'm lucky enough to have the chance to train people in communication and presenting, which I really love to do. That said, it's tough to find the way into something that's relatively new to me, coming from English speaking. I'd like to set this as a large rock as it's important for my happiness & goals, our family security, providing a positive role model for my son and helping people in general.

There are not specific little rocks that get in the way so much as getting intimidated by how big the three rocks above are. It's much easier to turn away and do something different that's easy and fun. In that sense, my small rocks are time wasting activities like games, random browsing or taking care of small tasks that don't make much difference in the grand scheme but serve as a psychological boost that "I did something",(e.g. clearing the inbox etc.)

Do you find any rocks are a challenge for you?

What absolutely great advice!! I'm going to cut this out and hang it above my desk to encourage WRITING FIRST before the small stuff, which will either get done eventually or, if it's not that important, not at all. Thanks, Melinda!

A simple post on a topic that's worth remembering. I'll do my best to let the little rocks go until I'm sure the big rocks are taken care of. I'm sure I'll slip from time to time but will stay focused on the important things.

Thank you :-)
